iPhone 3G's Free History

1993 - Newton MessagePad

Could the Newton MessagePad be the orginal iPhone? The form factor strikes clear resembalance with the all screen look that has now become so popular and almost common-place.

Whilst the Newton MessagePad was never a phone and has limited communication ability, it was certainly heading the right way, the new PDA/phone concept is a clear winner and exactly what the iPhone brings.

1998 - Steve Jobs returns and Ken Segall begins the i era

Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1998, and in this year the first 'i' product, the iMac was released. The name iMac was the brainchild of Ken Segall, and initially Steve Jobs hated it. The i is now synonymous with Apple and a cult name, its difficult to i-magine the world without this i-conic branding!

2001 - The iPod and iTunes

The iPod was born out of Apple's desire to create a non-bulky music player that was compatible with MAC whilst providing an easy to use interface.

iTunes, which was developed as an application for the iPod would become a fundamental part of the future iPhone and its highly successful apps.

The free iTunes store soon arrived in 2003 and allowed users to download music from the internet for their iPods, crucially the iTunes store added Digital Rights Management (DRM) to its audio, forcing the user to only use it for iPods. The first generation iPod

2007 - The first iPhone

The first iPhone was revealed at the Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco by Steve Jobs, and hailed as a revolutionary and magical product... literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone. This magical product was effectively a PDA which could make calls and most importantly had excellent web browsing ability.

Later on in that year, O2 won the exclusive contract for the iPhone, allowing the iPhone to come to the UK in November of 2007. The device sold more than 5 million units, however some users began to complain about slow browsing speeds.... this was the pre-cursor to a new faster iPhone.

2008 - The iPhone 3G

A year and a half after the launch of the iPhone, 3G was added to improve the browsing speeds. The actual look and feel of the iconic iPhone varied only slightly, most of the changes in this release were inside the iPhone.

It was prior to the release of the 3G version that Apple unveiled its third party application plan which would enable anyone to write apps for the phone. This was to lead to the major success that is now the Apps store.

2009 - The free iPhone 3Gs

And finally we arrive at the new iPhone 3Gs. What makes this one better than the free iPhone 3G? Externally there is no difference (except for the addition of the letter 's') - inside you'll find an improved CPU, a new compass, improved camera and better capacity. This new free iPhone also coincides with the release of software version 3.0 at so now allows for functions such as free video recording.
